MARS WR-5000-A LIGHT

The following photos were of the Mars WR-5000-A Light in the FP7 Western Pacific 805-A located at the Portola Railroad Museum.

This "figure 8" Mars Light is located in the upper headlight opening. The light is in the process of being renovated. It has a 12 volt bulb which is rated at 480 watts drawing a theoretical 40 amps. The motor is rated at 12 volts and the continuous current draw is 3 amps. The unit is missing the back reflector, red "lens" and bulb which were designed to make up the emergency red warning light. The unit is being "hot wired" for operation, with the 2 leads from the terminal board passing through the back reflector ring to the bulb and the motor. Plans are being made to make a power supply for the unit, possibly replacing the bulb with one of increased voltage rating to decrease the current demand of the unit. A Pyle-National dual headlight is in the lower headlight opening.

There is no case on this unit. The clamp structure securing the light to the locomotive has been mounted too far forward, causing the light to be tilted upwards 3° at its most most forward position against the porthole. The beam pattern is inclined upwards and can't attain a projection parallel to the tracks.
